Remnants of Authoritarianism: The Military in Indonesia

“The Spectra of Authoritarianism in Southeast Asia”, published in December 2019, is a collection of analytical essays on the many facets of authoritarianism in the region. It is a reminder that despite the optimism that Southeast Asia was progressing towards greater respect and protection of human rights as a result of the ASEAN Charter and the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration, the situation has not improved and in fact in many cases has regressed. The writers are all human rights experts from Southeast Asia and the chapters cover many topics including; implementation of international human rights law, human rights organisations, popular authoritarianism, freedom of the press, extremism and democracy.
